When: 7pm on the second Tuesday of each month
Where: dBug Resource Center
The purpose of the Linux/UNIX SIG is to provide a place to discuss and work on issues with running Linux and Unix systems on Macintosh computers. Many people do not know that beneath Leopard's pretty graphical user interface lies an Open Brand UNIX 03 Registered Product, conforming to the SUSv3 and POSIX 1003.1 specifications for the C API, Shell Utilities, and Threads. With Mac OS X, you get the best of both the Mac and UNIX worlds. Another thing many people do not know is that you can install other Linux and UNIX operating systems on Macs. This SIG will let you explore these topics and more.
Our next meeting on Tuesday, March 11th will be focussed on open source software available for Linux, Unix, and Mac OS X, how to get it and install it on Mac OS X using Fink or MacPorts with emphasis on image processing software, Gimp and ImageMagick. We will also be covering some basics for the Mac OS X users including how to create simple scripts and make them executable.
Bill Campbell, SIG Leader
