Board of Directors Meeting Minutes

Tuesday, November 1, 2005
  1. Treasurer's Report - Karen reported that dBug is currently in the black and included results of our Capital Improvement Drive. See the full report on the ExChange. Wil Nelson presented an analysis showing that with a sustained membership of 225, dBug could remain solvent, but that declining membership and lack of new income would likely result in insolvency.
  2. Old Business
    1. Resource Center Upgrades/Capital Improvement Project - The Capital Improvement Drive is now closed, great success! Details are in the Treasurer's report and on the Web site. Our most immediate needs include a projector and improved screen. Allan has investigated the cost of special paint to increase brightness of the projected image.
    2. Classes - Follow the Saturday Cafe 1-5pm, 6-10pm, or Sunday afternoons
      1. Final Cut: How did it go? Attendance was lighter than expected, seven persons, with $100 to dBug.
      2. Wil and Karen's Class Mac Maintenance Basics: How did the second one go? Two paying customers, $100 to dBug.
      3. Unix Class - Need to finalize details and set a date, perhaps in January. It was proposed to offer Bill Campbell an agenda in order to limit scope and provide focus. A $50 cost was proposed. We need a "hook" to make this a more compelling offering.
      4. WebObjects - still in planning stages
      5. Xcode/Cocoa - We'd like to see this class run quarterly. Mike will contact George.
      6. Mac Maintenance Basics Class - We'd like to see this class run quarterly as well. The next one might be in January after the Mac World Expo meeting.
      7. Follow 'Missing Manual' series as the book for iMovie/iDVD, iPhoto, OS X is a possibility.
      8. A Photoshop class was proposed, with a $50 cost.
    3. Details of the dues increased were finalized:
      • The dues increase will begin on January 1, 2006
      • Standard membership - $75
      • Seniors/Students - $60
      • Family membership - $35
    4. We discussed various income opportunities in some detail, including sharing the RC space (and rent) with other entities. Delicious Monster was one possibility.
    5. Caryn and Cathy delivered several Logitech "ladybug" mice for dBug resale at $20, at a profit for dBug. It's a two-button mouse with a click-wheel. Some features are automatically supported in OSX, and more are added with Logitech software. At least one will be a raffle prize.
    6. Mike reported that the Web site was down for a few days due to software difficulties with the iMac on which it runs. The server is running fine now.
    7. Dick Harrell noted that we're two MacNews issues behind. The USPO mailing site has not performed as well as it could, with some Members not getting the mailer for weeks after it is ordered. We decided to print, fold, label, and mail it ourselves this time to ensure it reaches most subscribers by Wednesday, November 9. Material for the "full" PDF is coming together. It will be a combined Sept-Oct issue.
  3. New Business
    1. Upcoming Elections: Election Committee: We have four nominees and the ballot is out to members. The next committee will need to remember to add the "vote for N" information on the ballot - omitted this time by oversight. The plan this year is to vote for all four. A fifth board member will need to be appointed as specified in the by-laws.
    2. The first Music SIG meeting was lightly attended. It will be mentioned in the MacNews mailer, and more effort will be done to advertise. The iDVD class was also not well attended. Clark did not advertise it to his own extensive list of prospective attendees, nor did we.
    3. The Genealogy SIG has not started yet. We've heard no word from Ben Werner.
    4. Upcoming Monthly Events
      1. November - MS Office - Microsoft staff will attend and share presentation
      2. December will be a holiday party. We are looking at a facility in Renton.
      3. January will feature a report from Macworld, and the meeting will be held on the 3rd Wednesday instead of the usual 2nd Wednesday.
      4. February - Curtis will do a Wireless Security presentation.
      5. March - Buying a New Mac: Waiting for Intel?
    5. Cathy Doser will ask Gordon Modin and Ed to update the Board on Final Cut Group.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:03pm.
