Present:
Ken Winkenweder, David Krafchick, Shaun McClurken, Tish Bailey, Mark Jacobson, Dona McAdam, Jon Pfaff, Joyce Schowalter, Bruce Robertson, Curtis Snow and Dick Carter.
Ken opened and read minutes from last month.
Reports:
Volunteer Coordinator: Joyce Schowalter.
Is working on ITEC show with WestWind and Apple Computer. dBug will be demonstrating iMovie and signing up members. The show is 5/9 and 5/10.
The CD project, we are 50 CDs ahead of signing up new members. There was a work party but missing CD labels prevented completion of project.
Ken asked about a list of names for volunteers that can be shared with other dBug leaders. This led to a discussion of finding more volunteers and creating a database of volunteers.
Publicity: Jon Pfaff.
Discussed where we could advertise our Event schedule.
Publications: Dona McAdam
To double the size of our newsletter from 8 to 16 pages would cost about $100 extra for our 1000 copy run. WestWind has offered to share their mailing list with us.
Membership: Bruce Robertson
Membership numbers for April:
New Family: 2
New Member: 6
Renewal: 12
Bruce reported that another duplicate number was given in April. This led to a discussion of why we issue duplicate numbers and how to prevent it. The duplicate number resulted from two banks of duplicate member numbers being handed out last fall. Bruce is working on a new system to eliminate this possibility.
Membership dues and cashier duties. Bruce and Cheryl Malstrom, treasurer, will create a more efficient system. What will most likely be is that all transactions will first be forwarded to Cheryl and she'll send a periodic report to Bruce so he can update the member database.
Mark pointed out that the membership numbers are still in decline and at the rate for the last three months our membership will be reduced by 100 by this time next year.
Mac Basics Class: Tish Bailey
She found a new location for the class at Mercer Island High. The room already has desks, can accommodate 30 students, has a projector screen and a microphone. The price is $10 an hour plus $10 for the microphone.
MacNews Editor: Shaun McClurken
Our new MacNews Editor said the transition is going well. He responded to general questions about the transition from the President and other board members. He spoke briefly about contributing reporters and mentioned that John Livingston will be contributing an article to an upcoming MacNews.
Main Meeting Coordinator: David Krafchick
Will begin coordinating main meetings starting in July. The May meeting is being run by Ken and the June meeting by Tim Hannon.
Vice President: David Krafchick
David is working with Diane Cohn of Apple Computer to organize the user group booth at MacWorld New York in July.
ExChange Planning Committee (X-Plan): Curtis Snow
Members are invited to their meeting on the 1st Saturday of every month.
Curtis talked about SoftArc, the company that creates the FirstClass software that dBug uses for our ExChange.
He then addressed upcoming opportunities dBug has in using wireless connectivity.
A discussion was held to discuss on how best to present changes to the ExChange.
Last Friday the ethernet hub went down and wasn't resolved until Sunday. Ken took the initiative to bring in a phone with the telephone numbers for key people who can trouble shoot the system if trouble comes up.
SIG Coordinator: Mark Jacobson
The Hypercard and AppleScript SIG are canceled until July because the SIG Leader, DeForest Shotwell, will be recovering from surgery.
SIG Leaders need to be found for the Web Design SIG and the new Mac Games SIG and the Web Design Committee.
Old Business:
Letting the leaders do there jobs: Ken Winkenweder.
Ken discussed for volunteers to just be aware who is doing which job, and let them do it without a lot of inquiring.
Projector: Ken Winkenweder
Ken is getting a more advanced Mitsubishi to try out to see if we can get away from the jaggies the current model has. If that doesn't work, he'll bring the Sharp back for a comparison before we buy.
New Business:
May main meeting: Ken Winkenweder
The meeting will have a panel of dBug experts to answer questions and teach a few tricks to get the most out of the Mac.
InfoLine: Mark Jacobson
Noticed that the InfoLine telephone system may be not as responsive as we want. He said that Cherie Nickell is doing a great job, but the number of calls may just be too much for one volunteer to adequately handle. He suggested we add two more volunteers to help Cherie. The discussion was tabled until Ken talks with Cherie.
Finances: Ken Winkenweder
Current Expenses: $3000 / month
Current Income: $3000 / month
dBug is at break even and needs to reduce income, create revenue and expand membership.
Resume Contest: Joyce Schowalter
Made a motion to award eight members a one month extension for the resume contest. David Krafchick seconded and the motion carried without dissent.
ITEC Show membership offer: Joyce Schowalter
Made a motion to offer memberships at the ITEC show and offer an 16 months for the price of one. David Krafchick seconded. Bruce Robertson asked if the extension offers really help bring in new members at an event. Joyce said that the response to the last offer at the Mac Basics class was good and that the key was to get the savings today as opposed to not getting it later.
Recontacting members who did not renew: Ken Winkenweder
Ken asked Bruce to create a list of old members that did not renew in the last year so we can contact them and ask them to join. Bruce agreed to get the list together and forward to Ken.
